Who sells a copy of the Clash's Give 'Em Enough Rope to the used bin, ever? Seriously. London Calling gets a lot of props for genre-hopping and consistent songwriting, but the previous album is a fast 10-song blast of fire about tourists feeling like targets in Jamaica ("Safe European Home"), faux-revolutionaries and/or military types getting violent ("Tommy Gun", "Guns on the Roof"), and running on the wrong side of the tracks ("Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad", "Stay Free"). To use a more contemporary analogy, there are fans who prefer this album to London Calling in the same way certain Radiohead junkies prefer The Bends to OK Computer and everything that came after that, and it's not a misguided assessment.

Eight bucks for thirty-something minutes of fuzzed-out goodness with boy-girl vocals from the U.K. that's simple, stupid, and sounds really good cranked up in my car stereo. I like the Subways.
